Online Guides for Using Chicago Manual of Style References

Online Guides for Using Chicago Manual of Style References
The Chicago Manual of Style is an incredibly useful resource for academic and scientific authors. The guidelines of many scholarly journals request that this style guide be used to prepare articles submitted for publication, but the Chicago Manual of Style provides so much detailed information on style, usage, grammar, punctuation, documentation, formatting and the publishing process in general that it can be helpful for sorting out thorny problems even when you are using different (and less informative) guidelines for references and other elements of a paper. On its web site, the Chicago Manual is called ‘the must-have reference for everyone who works with words,’ which in this case may not be too great an exaggeration.

The Chicago Manual can be accessed online by libraries, institutions, government agencies and corporations for subscription rates dependent upon the nature of the subscriber, but the online resource can also be used by individuals for an annual subscription of $35.00 or a two-year subscription of $60.00 (US). This includes access to the full contents of both the 15th and 16th editions of the Manual, and small groups of 6 to 50 members receive discounts. To view prices and subscribe. You can, of course, still purchase a print copy of the Manual as well.

If, however, you are not looking for the Manual as a whole (or to spend any money), but you need to make use of one of the Chicago referencing systems in a paper you are preparing for publication, you will probably be interested in the Chicago-Style Citation Quick Guide. Based on Chapters 14 and 15 of the Manual itself, the Quick Guide is open access and provides a long and accurate list of sample citations for each of the two Chicago-style documentation systems. Clicking on the left tab just below the introduction on this page brings the reader to sample citations for the Notes and Bibliography system favoured especially by scholars working in the humanities (history, literature and art), while clicking on the right tab reveals the sample citations for the Author–Date system often used in the social, natural and physical sciences. A variety of different kinds of sources (books, articles, conference papers, web sites etc.) are covered for each system, and for each kind of source the different ways of providing references within that system are outlined. For the Notes and Bibliography system, the full note reference for a source is followed by a shortened note reference (for second and subsequent citations) and then by the complete reference that should be used in the bibliography for that same source. For the Author–Date system, the full reference to a source as it should be used in the list of references is followed by the short parenthetical reference to the same source for in-text citation. The information provided in the Quick Guide is usually sufficient for constructing thorough and accurate Chicago-style references for the sources used in most academic and scientific papers.
