Advice on Resubmitting Your Revised Article to the Journal Editor
You will need to write another carefully worded letter to the editor when you have finished making your revisions and are ready to resubmit your paper. This time, however, you should explain exactly what you have done, which may differ somewhat (but ideally not too much) from what you were planning to do. It is unwise to assume that the editor will remember you, your paper or your planned revisions in detail or with complete clarity – many, many letters and articles cross a journal editor’s desk each week – but it is wise to assume that he or she can (and very likely will) return to your earlier letter to check what you have done against what you said you were going to do. Be sure to describe your solutions to all of the editor’s criticisms (a list is an effective and concise way in which to present this information) and provide clear and detailed explanations of your reasoning regarding any problems that you were unable to resolve – the problems, that is, that you forewarned the editor about in your initial reply.
If you discovered during the revision process that you were in fact able to make some changes that you had initially thought impossible, do highlight them in this second letter. If, on the other hand, you discovered that you simply could not resolve the problems that you had said you would be able to resolve in your initial reply, you will need to explain why with special care and keen awareness of the fact that such differences may well be unwelcome and could change the agreement that you have made with the editor. It is also a good idea to make it clear that you are more than willing to consider further revisions if they prove necessary.
